Buying Guide for Basketballs

How to choose the right Basketball for your program.
Ball Size:
- Size 7 (29.5”) – Best for boys age 15+ and men’s leagues.
- Size 6 (28.5”) – Best for girls age 12+ and middle school boys.
- Size 5 (27.5”) – Best for boys and girls ages 9–11.
- Size 4 (25.5”) – Best for boys and girls ages 5–8.
Why the Right Size Matters:
- The correct ball size helps players develop proper shooting, dribbling, and passing techniques — especially for younger athletes.
- An incorrectly sized basketball can make it difficult for younger players to handle the ball properly, leading to poor habits.
- The right size basketball makes the game more fun and helps build confidence and coordination.
Cover Types:
-
Composite Leather
o Made from synthetic composite materials that provide consistent grip and feel.
o Requires little to no break-in time.
o More durable and affordable than genuine leather.
o Designed for indoor and outdoor use.
o Most popular cover material for indoor play.
o Best for middle school, high school, and college, as well as indoor recreational leagues.
-
Genuine Leather
o Made from natural leather for superior performance once fully broken in.
o Requires a longer break-in period and ongoing care for optimal feel and grip.
o Less durable than composite cover balls.
o Designed for indoor use only.
o Less commonly used due to higher cost, lower durability, and maintenance needs compared to composite balls.
o Best for professional or elite indoor play only.
-
Rubber
o Extremely durable and designed to handle rough outdoor surfaces like asphalt and concrete.
o Requires no break-in period.
o Provides maximum durability but offers less grip and feel than leather or composite balls.
o Designed for outdoor and indoor use.
o Best for outdoor games, youth leagues, and general recreational use.
-
Synthetic (Training/Display)
o Constructed from durable man-made materials.
o Primarily used for training basketballs or autograph/display purposes.
o Best for practice sessions and non-competitive use.
Air Pressure:
- The recommended air pressure for most basketballs is between 7.5 and 8.5 PSI (pounds per square inch).
- Check pressure with a standard pressure gauge to ensure proper inflation. If one isn’t available, perform a quick bounce or sound test:
- Crisp, clear sound → Properly inflated.
- Dull thud → Underinflated; add more air.
- Sharp, high-pitched sound → Overinflated; release some air.
- Proper inflation ensures consistent bounce, feel, and control. It also extends the lifespan of your basketball.
Association Stamps:
-
NFHS-Stamped Balls
o Basketballs with the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) stamp are required for official high school gameplay. These balls meet all standards for size, weight, and performance.
-
Non-NFHS-Stamped Balls
o Balls without the NFHS stamp are ideal for practice and are typically more affordable.
o On our website, you’ll find non-NFHS basketballs listed alongside their corresponding NFHS-approved versions. This makes it easy to purchase both official game balls and matching practice balls for a complete program setup.
